My Students
My students are overall a great group that usually get shortchanged. I teach in a high needs school district and our school has a reputation for being the "bad" school. Let me tell you that is far from the truth. I have taught there for four years and love my students. They are so colorful, funny, and entertaining. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't say something to crack me up. Don't get me wrong, they can also be challenging. They don't always have respect for the classroom proceedings, but I believe part of that can be fixed.
I am constantly being surprised and impressed with what some of my students come up with.
Whether it is in answer to a question or a random question they come up with. Many of them have had limited exposure to what the world really has to offer and they are curious. I encourage any and all questions, even if they are off topic. I feel that if the seek answers, who am I to deny them?
My Project
So many of my students are fidgety. They are constantly moving, drumming on the table, or getting up. I understand it is hard for them to keep still, but it can be a huge distraction.
My students need flexible seating options such as fitness balls, yoga mats, and adjustable stools.
Let them move around and get comfortable so they can learn. If students can't focus then they can't learn. That urge to move around can be distracting. Letting students pick the most comfortable and appropriate working seat for themselves allows them to get comfy so they can focus and get to work. I want to create a variety of options for students to choose from.
