My students need Bouncy Bands to help them release extra energy, anxiety, and tension while they work at their desks. Students are better equipped to learn when they're able to move and get their "wiggles" out!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our inner-city, low-income elementary school.
My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, specific learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance.
They come to my classroom excited and ready to learn, but often they have extra energy, anxiety, and tension in their lives that makes coming to school difficult. The typical student in my class reads at a first-grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. One hundred percent of our students are African American or Latino and benefit from free lunch. The opportunity gap and achievement gap are apparent among our student population and the student populations of more affluent areas of our school district.
My Project
Students will be using the Bouncy Bands within the classroom to help them release extra energy without being disruptive to the other students and themselves. My students that fall on the autism spectrum or have ADHD find that moving helps them to concentrate better and more effectively engage in classroom activities, but sometimes their "active" learning can be a distraction to themselves and others. By incorporating Bouncy Bands in the classroom, the students will be able to quietly engage in a motor activity while still accessing the curriculum. What a wonderful way to keep both the students and the teacher happy!
