My Students
Room 403 has lots of wiggly students! Active learning is an important part of our classroom, but it's important that everyone is safe at all times! We need some Disc O Sit cushions to help our students with special needs to be able to wiggle safely while they work!
My students are exuberant learners, who come to school with a smile despite the tough home situations that many of them come from.
Most of my 3rd graders walk to school each day, in a neighborhood that has had more murders than any other neighborhood in our great city of Chicago. Despite the challenges they face, my students persevere and all have goals to attend college. They are children who crave knowledge and positive relationships, and they are active learners who like to experience learning first-hand.
I have very active students in my class, including several with ADHD who do not take medication. Often they can be found with their chairs turned around, or sitting in their chair in unsafe manners. They have occasionally fallen out of their chairs because of the way that they sit. These students tend to have trouble focusing in class as well, and would really benefit from the Disc O Sit, which would allow them to move around in their seat while they work and read at their desks.
My Project
There are several studies that have shown students, including those with ADHD and other special needs, focus better in the classroom when they are allowed some movement. One way my students can move while focusing is to sit on an inflatable cushion, like the Disc O Sit. When my students sit on their new Disc O Sit cushions, they will be sitting on a slightly unstable surface. The slight instability of the surface causes them to continuously make minor adjustments with their core muscles to stay balanced and seated on the object. The constant small movements of the core muscles will allow them to in a sense fidget without appearing to move.
These Disc O Sit cushions will provide a safe way for my students to get their wiggles out while they work.
Not only that, but it will cut down on distractions for other students, eliminating the problem of students falling out of their chairs. In addition, it will help those fidgety students to focus better so that they don't miss out on any teaching and learning!
