My Project
Children are great at finding ways to learn better. When teachers listen to them, we can better support them. My students are always rocking their chairs back and forth. Rather than always telling them "no" or "stop that," I try to listen to what they are telling me their minds and bodies need. And when I listen to them and allow them to move, the effect on their focus and engagement is very positive!
Our school is a public school in a high poverty area, with a very diverse student population.
There are roughly 30 languages spoken in the homes of our students. Yet our students eagerly come in every day, ready for new discoveries and new challenges. We work hard to help our students find ways to make learning more accessible and more engaging for them. These wobble stools would allow them to move the way their bodies want to, but in a safer way. They will be able to use these seats in place of the chairs at their desks, as well as spread out around the room for individual and partner work. They will be able to be more active, while adding to their engagement in their own learning. These alternative seating options would also be especially helpful for my students with ADHD or who need to be constantly moving. Allowing them to move while they learn may seem like a simple thing, but it can often be their key to success in school and beyond.
