My preschoolers are 90% low socioeconomic children who give the best they can give, despite their various learning abilities and disabilities. Some needs are met through offering sensory strategies such as flexible seating, fidget tools, or weighted objects. Our school is located in a very diverse suburb outside of St. Louis where children take pride in their everyday achievements. My children learn best from hands on experiences and love to move around especially during large group and small group activities. I find that they are more able to focus when they can wiggle a bit or sit comfortably in different ways.
My Project
My preschoolers LOVE to wiggle & move all while learning through play! Flexible seating allows children to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During circle time or center time, children need to be comfortable so they can focus, listen and participate in the activity or lesson. Often we sit on the floor or at tables with chairs that are not always the appropriate height for preschoolers to work at their best. For example, in order for children to be successful at writing their feet should touch the floor. Also, being able to wiggle lets them focus their attention to the task. I have noticed amazing differences in my preschoolers when they are given a choice in their seating or have ways to move their hands by using fidget tools. They almost always make good choices about where they sit and what they need. Plus they are more engaged, and focused.
