My Students

What do children sit on at school? For many of you, your answer would a chair. However, in my classroom students choose whether to sit on a stability ball, couch, papasan chair, or cushions. I adopted alternative seating because research has shown students learn better when allowed to move.

I teach in a small farming town in Illinois.

We have such a diverse student population. On one side of town we have students that come from half million dollar homes and on the other side of town students who come from public housing situations. 30% of our student population receive free and reduced price lunch and school fees. My goal for all my students is to give each and every one of them the SAME opportunity to learn with every advantage possible.

My Project

From the first day of school we discuss how to choose a seat that will best fit your learning needs. It is so rewarding to see students choosing to sit on the stability balls, pedal on the desk bikes while siting on a papasan chair, use the mini stepper while sitting on the couch, or rocking on the wiggle seats. I would love to new stability balls that are better designed for the size of a child. I would also love to add bouncy bands to the computer chairs. By adding movement to every seating/learning option in my class, I am maximizing EVERY part of my students day.

Your donation to this project will not only help my students activate more areas of their brain to increase learning, but you will be empowering students to learn more about how they learn.

Students will be able to take ownership over their learning, which is a skill to last their lifetime!
