This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school everyday ready to learn. Despite their eagerness, I have a few students that struggle with maintaining focus and control. I am always asking them how I can best help them, and sometimes they are not sure what that is.
Our school is a Title 1, Renaissance school.
A majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. There are a large number of migrant families that come and go throughout the year, which makes it difficult for students to get consistent instruction. About 95% of the students do not speak English as their first language. Despite the challenges our face, they enter the classroom smiling and full of energy to learn each day.
My Project
My students work very hard and want to learn. There are a few students that struggle with staying engaged because they are fighting to gain control of their bodies. I often hear requests from these students to be able to pace at the back of the room with a clipboard and their paper. Others need constant reminders to have all four legs of the chair touching the floor. Having Wobble Chairs in the classroom would give my students another option and choice in how they can hep themselves to stay focused and channel their excess energy. These students need to move in order to learn, but they need to be able to do this without distracting others in the room as well. They would not need to pace or stand at the back of the room while their peers are seated closer to the board and can easily engage in discussions. Being able to take one of these chairs with them when they work in cooperative groups will help keep them grounded with their classmates instead of wandering or bouncing around.
All my students need an environment that meets their needs so they can learn.
Not only will these Wobble Chairs help to reduce distractions for all students, it will also provide my wiggly students with a way to taking ownership of their needs and help them learn self-control. This life-skill will help them to be successful in school and in life.
