This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need to read and they need to be engaged. This novel by Daniel Handler, a bestselling author better known as Lemony Snicket, is sure to catch my students' attention. Why We Broke Up will catch their attention with the title, and keep them engaged and reading in and out of the classroom.
I work at a low income, Title I school at which 100% of students qualify for free lunch.
Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. I challenge them because they need to be challenged. They need to learn that they are capable of meeting obstacles and overcoming them. Many of my students are college-bound, highly motivated, hard-working and dream of success. One of the best activities they can do to help ensure future success is to read, read, read.
My Project
These novels will be used in my homeroom, which is supposed to be engaged in Silent Sustained Reading every day. I am desperately in need of a class set of novels that they will find interesting. Once they are hooked, it is easy to get them to read in class. But if they don't enjoy the material, it is like pulling teeth to get them to read. That is why I am asking for this novel set. It is a story that my students can relate to: high school students who fall in love and then inevitably, break up. I am sure they will be interested in reading it, and becoming better readers will help them to become better students in all of their classes.
Reading and writing are such important skills, and your donation will help my students to continue to build these skills.
