Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know how hard it is to maintain the attention of five year old children? I teach them theme units and daily lessons everyday. I can read them books relating them to these themes ans show them pictures, but how lovely it would be if they worked on puzzles themselves relating to the subjects.
My students are very young 4 & 5 year old children who live in Southern California.
They need tangible hand games like puzzles to help them build their fine motor skills. Children get such a boost of confidence when they work on puzzles and complete them on the carpet. My students are mostly from low income families & almost all children qualify for a free lunch. Our school make-up is about 99% Hispanic. Many of our new students have never been in school and Kindergarten will be their first school experience.
My Project
Most people don't remember their 1st grade, 3rd grade, or 5th grade class, but almost everyone remembers their Kindergarten. This is the grade where many of their first school memories are created. These very young students are in such need of fine motor skills. Puzzles are an excellent way to present a child with a "problem" and have them solve it on their own or with a partner. The partner doesn't have to be a student of the same sex or a student that is considered brighter than the other. Children can work side by side working for a common goal and how much better could it get if the puzzles they work on are related to the subjects taught in the classroom? Working with others and succeeding builds confidence and vocabulary skills. The problem solving skills and fine motor skills goes without mention, but just as important.
I have 3 floor puzzles in my room right now.
Two of them are incomplete and the third is related to the missions in CA. I teach kindergarten...and my kids love these 3 puzzles! How much cooler would it be if they worked on puzzles related to their subject and that were more appropriate to their level? Students learn to communicate with one another, problem solve, share, and to feel successful when they finish a puzzle. These are skills they will carry on into their next grades & lives.
