Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These inner city kids need, in addition to showered praise, incentives to keep focused on their books and writing. The feeling of accomplishment and success is gratifying, but a small candy or plastic ninja makes them light up with pure glee. They deserve a prize. Life rewards hard workers, as do I.

All our students get free lunch and breakfast.

Many have little, and most come in with crazy stories about home: fights and drugs and drama. Education is definitely not on the front burner for some. Maybe not even the back burner. Perhaps it's hiding under the stove for "someday?" But whatever the stories, and whatever the gigantic lack of role models in their home lives, these kids are good, sweet kids who need love, care, and excitement from something other than video games. (Excitement = a plastic ninja or cool pen. Ask any kid.) A cool eraser goes a long way to encouraging a student to complete a great book or writing assignment. A small prize gives students the feeling of having won because they're not able, yet, to see their education as the prize. For now, little plastic ninjas rule. No? Totally. My students need pens, erasers, coloring books, and other fun incentive motivators to celebrate successes and help them finish reading and writing assignments.

My Project

The majority of the homework I give is reading. The only time kids actually do their homework is if the readings are awesome and if they an't help but be captivated. Then they're willing to put the first-person shooter games aside for a little bit. Donors Choose helped put some great books in our library (thank you!), but the kids still need a little push. I want to offer students a little plastic ninja or monkey for completing a book, finishing a challenging project, or being good role models in class. I want to reward their efforts. Who doesn't love a little recognition? Little monkeys, tiny ninjas, cool tattoos, and fun pens and erasers are spectacular incentives because, though they are seventh and eighth graders, these students are absolutely and completely little kids at heart.

The more students read, the more they feel successful and proud of themselves.

The more writing they do, the more they improve. The more pride, the harder they work. The harder they work, the better the grades that are earned. Better grades = college = job = meeting their potential. Then, when the donors and I are old, we'll have intelligent people who read when they were young leading our country. These kids can make it in life with the right books and cool, small, plastic ninja incentives.
