I teach Latin and English, grades 9-12, in a high poverty, inner-city public NJ high school.
We want to boost our students' SAT scores. Higher SAT scores increase a student's chance for acceptance and scholarships to college.
My students do alot of work on vocabulary, derivatives and word origins. In my Latin classes, whenever I introduce new vocabulary, we play the "derivative" game. The students form teams. Each team receives a list of Latin words and they must list as many English derivatives as they can. Each team calls it a "game" and they playfully compete for the longest list of words. It is a great activity to help increase their vocabulary. However, it would help if we had dictionaries in the classroom. The students all share my two personal dictionaries.
If you study Latin, you would know that the Latin word for dog is "canis". Therefore, dogs are "canines." You would also be able to easily decipher the meaning of 60% of all English words. Let's boost the younger generation's vocabulary and those SAT scores!
