Who's Got Game?

My students need 6 childhood games (including Connect Four and Boggle), 2 block sets, 1 puzzle set, and 3 jump ropes.

Play is extremely important, especially in early childhood. I’m not talking about video or computer games but the good old-fashioned board games of yore (well, at least for me, the mid-1980s). While it is important for kids today to keep up with technology and current media, nothing can replace the feeling of getting a triple word score in Scrabble or finishing part of that tricky 100-piece puzzle. And if victory wasn’t yours the first time, you can always challenge your playmate to another round, or grab a friend to help you figure out those challenging corner segments. The barrier free setting of PS 10 has made my few years of teaching interesting, sometimes crazy, but always deeply rewarding. For two years, I was the general education teacher in a second grade inclusive setting. Now in my third year at the school, I am on my own with a terrific bunch of second graders in a general education class. Every Friday we have "Center Time", which the kids really look forward to. They get a chance to choose an activity they would like to spend the afternoon doing. The chance to pick first is equally distributed among the students, as each week we go down a master list of the children’s names. These activities are enrichment based (working with pastels, listening to a book on tape, typing up stories on the computer, etc.) and more simply stated---fun! It would be awesome to add a "Game Center" to the mix. Not only does playing games promote critical thinking but the opportunity to teach good sportsmanship and social skills exists as well. And of course they are that wonderful f-word which everyone, including teachers, should experience on a Friday afternoon---FUN, FUN, FUN! Oh and the request for jump ropes (another form of play) is for when I take the kids outside to the playground. We aren’t scheduled for gym (even though there is a gym teacher) so I like to take them outside at least once a week. The last time, we couldn’t find any jump ropes to borrow.
