It can be difficult for students to really grasp how small changes in an environment can affect the amount of food available for animals, and the continuing functionality of the food chain of which that animal is a part. Students will get to dissect an owl pellet to draw connections between food chains and ecosystem challenges.
Hands-on real-life experiences make difficult learning experiences come alive!
This experience will show students how food chains work by dissecting the pellet to see what the owl's food source is. Students can then hypothesize about what could happen if the food sources didn't exist due to overpopulation or environmental pollution.
This activity is also a great opportunity for students to study skeleton structures of small rodents, related to their study of the human skeletal system.
