My project needs 108 owl pellets and 14 copies of the book Owl Puke.

I am a science resource teacher in a public school in Winston-Salem, N.C. I see all the school's students and provide science enrichment. This project is intended for both first graders and fifth graders.
First graders are enthusiastic learners. One unit of study during the year is raptors. Our children learn raptor adaptations such as talons, beaks and predator prey relationships. We spend a good bit of time on the owl and I would love to be able to show the children real owl pellets. This would be a compelling hands on experience for these children. Each one could have their own pellet to dig into, find bones, use a chart to figure out the prey, and then take the bones home to mom and dad. Just talking about how owls cough up the pellet is so gross and exciting to them, they would be thrilled beyond belief to get a hold of a real one. Giving these children a love of science and at the same time encouraging their natural inquisitiveness and curiosity is my number one goal.
My fifth graders have a unit on ecosystems and biodiversity. Fifth graders are a bit harder to get enthused but there is a natural gross factor to owl pellets that is sure to get them motivated. Part of our study of ecosystems involves a discussion of predator prey relationships, food chains and food webs. Not only would they have to learn all the appropriate terminology but we would share books to read out loud about owls and the predator-prey relationship. Doesn't a book entitled "Owl Puke" just make you want to read? The older children would be engaged in putting their reading based knowledge into hands on practice. From their pellets the students will be encouraged to make a whole prey skeleton. Can they do it? You bet they can and love it.
