My Students

What makes our classroom special? We are the only public, self-contained inclusion Montessori classroom in the city of Chicago! We are a neurodiverse group of learners; in our room students with diagnosed learning differences work alongside their neurotypical peers. We are Montessori learners; my students have a lot more choice, autonomy, and responsibility than they would in a traditional classroom, we learn all class subjects together, and my students stay with me for three years, from 4th to 6th grade, instead of just one. Our home is a Chicago Public school, and my students are largely African-American and come from low-income homes.

My Project

My students will use the hammock chairs, trampoline, and desk bands to stimulate their nervous systems so they are primed to do their best learning.

Most of my students with disabilities require frequent opportunities throughout the school day to experience vestibular (whole body) motion and exercise their gross motor skills.

Hammock chairs, trampolines, and desk bands provide opportunities to spin, jump, and kick.

Cognitive science shows that increased opportunities to move their bodies help kids with sensory processing problems. It allows them to stay more focused during their independent work, increases their time on task, reduces impulsive behavior that distracts classmates, and leads to less classroom conflicts.
