My Students

Our northern Minnesota school houses 3 year old preschool through 12th grades; this is is a challenge, but also great for teachers to get to know the students and continuously provide targeted instruction for students’ individual needs. Within our small school we have one music classroom and one music teacher - me. As their only music teacher I’m hoping to help students become more engaged and involved in music making to ensure they benefit from the lifelong skills learned through music education.

My Project

Our middle school students are struggling to find interest in middle school music classes. This is likely from lack of understanding the connection between music they listen to at home and what’s learned in music class. Currently the students do not have the opportunity to engage in learning how to play songs they like and know from outside of school because of lack of materials.

My students need ukuleles to help bridge the gap between popular music and musicianship.

Not only will this help my students practice the many skills associated with learning a musical instrument and musicianship of performing, it will also increase their interest in music class and foster a lifelong interest in music-making.
