This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every human on the planet should know about Henrietta Lacks! Her cancer cells were taken without her knowledge or permission, and those cells, kept alive in a petri dish, are still reproducing today, and have moved medical science forward by leaps and bounds. Her cancer cells were the first to survive outside of the living host and they have continued to survive and replicate. Since then, doctors have tried to kill these cells in an effort to find a cure for cancer.

Henrietta's contribution to science, without her knowledge, or permission, is immeasurable.

The cells, called HELA cells (for the first 2 letters of her first and last name) have helped cure Polio and even helped find a vaccine for the coronavirus.

I want my students to read this book, now, while they are in middle school so they know how HELA cells, and, of course, Henrietta Lacks, contributed to scientific progress.
