Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a technology teacher who teaches to a diverse group of almost 400 students from Grades 3-5. Our school is located in a high poverty area in a low-socioeconomic, urban neighborhood. My students come from very diverse backgrounds with many different learning styles.
My students come from many different socioeconomic backgrounds including a large group of English Language Learners (ELL), students with learning and emotional disabilities, and students with very deficient reading skills.
Although my students are very motivated and knowledge-hungry, they do not have the proper skills and tools to succeed. Many of them come to school with no basic supplies and no proper family support. In addition, the lack of available resources in our school due to budget issues makes it more difficult for them to acquire the important skills necessary for success later in life. Since most of my students do not have access to technology at home, I want to create a safe and nurturing environment where technology is easily accessible to them. I want to give them the skills that they need in school and for the rest of their life.
My Project
Although I teach in a computer lab where there are 32 computers, they are outdated. Over 90% of the computers “crash” or “freeze” at one point. There are always at least 2 computers that will automatically “scan” and “repair” itself in the middle of a student’s project. This process normally takes up to 20 minutes, meanwhile, the class period is only 45 minutes long. This causes the student to be “idle” since there are no extra computers and everyone else is working on their own project at their computer. If we have a laptop, then the student can continue to work. They have been working on wonderful projects such as creating brochures, slideshows, newsletters, and various types of research papers by using the Internet and Google Classroom. They also have been learning how to type and eventually will learn coding. But who wants to use the computer if it’s going to freeze and lose half of a class period? Using technology should be fun, not frustrating.
I believe that technology is essential in our everyday life and our future depends on it.
Students need the technological skills for school and for life beyond the classroom walls. This means we need to provide the proper working equipment and the skills necessary to use them--at all times!
