I teach at the only inner city middle school in my city. Many of our students struggle with reading. I start the school year out studying this book because the students I teach really relate with Joey, the main character of this book. His antics entertain them, and they enjoy the book.
My students are sixth graders who face daunting social and economic challenges.
They are energetic and view school as an opportunity to leave behind the struggles they face at home. They struggle with reading, and more then 50% of them are placed in a remedial reading course. Using books like the one I have requested engages them and encourages them to want to read more.
My Project
I am requesting 30 copies of the book Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key. This book is used as a novel study which covers all of the learning standards required by our state. After reading this book year after year my students beg me to use the sequel book as the next novel study for the year. The trust in my judgment they acquire from this book allows me to present more challenging books to them throughout the school year. Also, the students end up checking out the sequel from the library to read on their own.
Please help me foster a love of reading in my students!
In our world where technology is so prevalent young people have forgotten how entertaining books can be. The comedy throughout the book captures the attention of the students, and they cannot wait to read a new chapter each day. Not only will my students use the book, all of the sixth graders at my school will have the opportunity to enjoy the book.
