This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

100% of my students are recently-arrived immigrants to America. As newcomers to the U.S., my students speak more than 40 native languages and yearn to be part of the "American teen experience". However, they face many obstacles and stress in adjusting to their new lives in America. Some are the primary caregivers for their families, and feel dire pressure to quickly learn English.

My students are often forced to balance traditional cultural values with new, unfamiliar social norms; act as primary translators for their families; and work to financially support their extended families in America, as well as abroad.

To top it off, they feel daily pressure and combined stressors to meet high expectations in developing solid literacy skills, building emotional, social and intellectual intelligence, and paving clear paths to a future in college and a career.

My Project

As diverse teens from all over the world, most of my students are formally learning about the body-mind connection in a health class for the first time. As new immigrants living in New York City, they show great resilience in confronting "Junior Year in an American high school" with its fast lesson pacing, intense language demands, internship, college planning, and high-stakes exams like the SAT. Within my Health Education classroom (the only health class they take during high school), I strive to offer them choices for physically and emotionally safe, supportive activities. Our "Room to Grow" is the foundation for this; it's a place where they can de-stress amidst a busy day. Students originally designed the space during an "Emotional Health Unit Project" after researching the disproportionate levels of stress, depression and anxiety among American teens.

Since my students created their "Room To Grow" they have been engaging in healthier behavior as they unplug, meditate, stretch or simply sit together (or on their own) to read, gather their thoughts and collaborate on projects.

I've especially noticed more students understanding how dependency on electronics can cause stress and distraction, and now they've chosen to make our "Room to Grow" a "phone-free" space! Your support will enable students to access enhanced exercise equipment, more seating and a set of books and audio cds on mindfulness. More students will be able to utilize the Room for reading and low-impact, contained exercise. Please give my students this opportunity to stay fit and focused as they explore healthy paths to adulthood.
