My students need a variety of Makerspace materials to light up their creativity and passion for creating!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students attend this Title I school in grades 1 through 5. We have general education, bilingual, and dual-language (English/Spanish) classes available to them. The majority of them (98%) come from economically disadvantaged families; as such, they may not have the opportunities to get their hands on various books and projects in order to spur their imagination.
Despite the circumstantial challenges placed on the students, they were able to meet and even exceed the state standard on the STAAR testing in 2015.
Our students are capable, bright, and the future of this country.
My Project
The majority (98%) of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds; as such, they generally cannot afford even the most basic of school supplies. Having a MakerSpace in the library will allow students from all backgrounds the opportunity to dabble, draw, paint, create, and innovate with supplied materials. They can create circuits, complete mazes, and craft a duct-tape bracelet (among other things) in the open environment of our MakerSpace. The whole concept of our Makerspace is there there are no rules!
With the emphasis on STEAM in today's educational curriculum, elements of MakerSpaces are becoming more and more essential to a well-rounded education and lifelong growth mindset.
Creating an environment of thought, innovation, and risk-tasking encourages our children to develop into forward-thinkers who are not afraid to try ideas and adapt as necessary. The MakerSpace is a risk-free area in which students are allowed to tinker, create, edit, and make mistakes. Some examples of projects that students have completed in the past are:
* LEGO Challenges
* Magnatile Towers
* Snap Circuit Alarm
* Cards for parents and teachers
* Unique, handmade jewelry
Housing the MakerSpace in the library ensures that every student in the school will have the opportunity to utilize the materials. All students grades 1 through 5 have an activity rotation through the library, where they can dabble and create with limited restrictions.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
