Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in Chicago where my students have many home, community, and educational challenges. Fortunately, my students do not let these obstacles get in their way of having a meaningful and rich education. Nothing is an excuse! Instead, my students view these challenges as motivation to do better and succeed in school!

Watching my students excitement in the classroom encourages me to create rigorous and thoughtful curriculum in addition to having a safe and nurturing classroom environment.

My hope is to become a better teacher and role model everyday.

My Project

These everyday classroom necessities such as pencils, a sharpener, scissors, and glue will make a huge impact in my classroom. We are having to send home larger and more expensive school supply lists to parents every year due to so many budget cuts at school. Parents are having to spend up to one hundred dollars on supplies. This is a lot of money. Therefore, more than half of my students come to school without pencils, scissors, glue and crayons.

Those who are lucky to have purchased the supplies realize how quickly they get used.

By Christmas, we usually are out of pencils and it becomes a distraction to students trying to borrow a pencil or having to wait their turn to use a pair of scissors. Energy is spent on finding supplies instead of thinking through problems and recording results. Unfortunately, there is no money in the school budget to replenish these supplies and parents are unable to help especially when they have 2 or more children in school. It is up to me to replenish these necessary supplies so that we focus on instruction with no disruptions.

I thank you in advance for helping my students use quality items in the classroom. Thank you.
