Who Killed The Secretary?

My Forensic Science students need a "Whose DNA Was Left Behind" lab kit, a DNA Electrophoresis Kit and a Student Lab Guide.

If you love hands-on learning and mock crime scenes than you can relate to these kids! Our school serves a 7-12 diverse student population. One of the classes I offer is "CSI Colorado" - a forensic science class that teaches students to become critical thinkers. Many of the skills they learn in the classroom are applied through school-wide mock crime scenes.

DNA just solved the case! Throughout the course, students solve mock crimes using fingerprints, blood typing and handwriting samples - but never DNA. These young crime scene investigators have seen DNA gel electrophoresis secure a guilty plea on TV, but never had the opportunity to practice using this technique themselves in our mock crimes.

The resources I've requested are: lab supplies for a demo DNA electrophoresis kit, a simulation lab activity, and a general forensic science lab manual. I am able to work with our shop teacher to build other gel casting trays enough for all lab groups, and can prepare more agar gel samples, but the actual electrophoresis chamber and power supply are out of my personal budget. As DNA is one of the latest technologies which has helped solve many cold cases, I truly think the students learning of forensic science would be greatly enhanced with the addition of these supplies.
