My Students

"Luck has nothing to do with it."- Serena Williams

"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something.

But I can't accept not trying again." - Michael Jordan

These are just 2 of the many quotes I have hanging in my classroom that I use to encourage students to take risks and to reinforce a growth mindset. They come from diverse performance levels and backgrounds from within a large urban setting. About 25% of them receive special education services, 8% are English Language Learners, and 61% are economically disadvantaged.

My students are passionate about sports. Almost daily I hear them debating about the game the night before- the plays, the players, the calls, who's better, etc... They themselves are both competitive and playful. Many wish to pursue careers in sports-related professions, and we provide them opportunities at every grade level for authentic learning experiences towards that goal.

My Project

At the Pathfinders Summer Institute at Indiana University, I will become trained to teach the Bootstrap Data Science course. Although Bootstrap provides a thorough and rigorous curriculum as well as lesson plans and workbooks, I will develop the curriculum to adapt to the interest of my students and vision of our school.

According to their website, "Bootstrap is one of the largest providers of formal CS education to girls and underrepresented students nationwide." In this particular computer science course, students develop their own statistical question, (e.g.

Who Is the Greatest Player in the NBA?), and then mine and analyze big data to support their answer.

This course has lots of bang for the buck: students will learn Statistics, Computer Science, Business, and Public Speaking. It will be project-based and will provide several authentic learning experiences such as writing an article or filming a broadcast as an announcer in the style of EPSN's First Take show. These projects will be presented to our school's advisory board members and sports business professionals or submitted for publication.
