This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Elvis Presley? Who's that?" "Miss! They say Harriet Tubman was a conductor on the underground railroad. Is that like a subway?" "Who is Anne Frank, teacher?" As my students work through curriculum and read new books, they start coming across famous people and events throughout history. However, they have not had the opportunity to learn about these people and their accomplishments. Our curriculum doesn't have a place for students to explore history to the extent that their curiosity would like and I struggle to provide them with a sufficient number of books to satiate that hunger for information. I work in a low-income school and books are the only window to the greater world my students have. We don't have the opportunity to travel as a class and trips to the museum are limited. I want to give my students as many experiences as I can while they are in my classroom, and discussions guided by books are a great way for me to do that. I can integrate history lessons into reading and provide the children with plenty of resources for them to continue their own investigations. We need an extensive collection of biographies to capitalize on their curiosity. Our list includes Amelia Earhart, William Shakespeare, Anne Frank, Christopher Columbus, Barack Obama and many more. However, getting enough books into the classroom is always difficult. I have a very limited budget for the classroom and concentrating on basic supplies consumes a majority of my budget. I want to get a large variety of books for my students to read. They are always so enthusiastic when they get new books - they can't wait to read them! Getting a whole collection of books would allow every student in the room to read a new book, allowing me to capitalize on their excitement and keep them engaged in their reading. Your generous donation would help provide my class with a collection of biographies so I can answer my students' numerous questions! Providing us with multiple copies of several books to allow me to use them in Book Talk Stations, allowing the students to read, discuss and teach each other about these historical figures. We also need large collection of biographies will help encourage all of my students to read and explore. Your donation will give my students a new way to study history!
