My students need two iPad minis to communicate with their pen pals and to improve their editing skills which will improve their writing.

My Students
Who is telling me this stuff? My students are pen pals with a neighboring city. We write back and forth, but we are ready to push the limits with pen pals. The students will be engaged in the writing process with their pen pals through the iPad and Skype. This will make the process meaningful!
We are a third grade classroom that includes a variety of hands-on experiences with our learning.
I have 22 students with a wide variety of backgrounds. I typically have students from several nationalities. Not all of my students have access to computers, iPads, and other technology. Most of my students really struggle with the writing process. They enter third grade with a fear of doing a lot of writing and test preparation. I want to ease those fears by including technology and peer interaction.
My Project
Students' writing will come to life with these two iPad minis! They will edit and revise on the spot with their pen pal just as real authors do. The students will get immediate feedback instead of waiting for a letter a month later when they have forgotten what they wrote about in the first place. Students will be able to engage in "writing talk" with another peer instead of only hearing it from the teacher. I will use Skype cameras, which I received from another grant, so that they can see each other and view the same piece of writing at the same time. I can't wait to see the students' eyes when they participate in such a wonderful writing experience, how much they will grow as writers, and the excitement to write that next piece. I will have a room full of authors!
Writing is our life!
Students will have to write the rest of their lives. I want to make writing in my classroom meaningful for
children and ensure that it has an authentic purpose (which especially helps my ELL students). Such opportunities help children become skilled and enthusiastic writers in their everyday lives. The iPad can be used as a whole group lesson and then independent practice with their pen pal. My students will be asking, "When can we write?" I can't wait!
