My Students
We all have people we looked up to when we were growing up. Some of them are close to us like our parents, relatives and teachers. Others, we admired from far away such as famous athletes, movie stars and people that have made a difference such as Nelson Mandela.
My school is a Title I school where over 90 percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to economic hardship.
They often lack the resources at home to help them grow as students as well as citizens of our community. They rely on school to provide them with exposure to people from all walks of life such as those in these children's biography books.
My Project
My students need children's biographies about people from all walks of life, including artists, athletes, political figures and heroes, to inspire them to set goals. These 50 biography books profile the lives of past and present people of significance from different walks of life, career paths and socioeconomic backgrounds. From Paul Revere to Claude Monet and Barack Obama, these books introduce different people in an engaging and easy to understand manner.
These materials provide students stories of people who overcame hardships, faced difficult challenges head on and succeeded despite what others may have expected from them.
This diverse group of people will allow students to find someone they can relate with and emulate as they strive to become whatever they want to be.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
