Whiteboards to Power Collaborative Learning

My Project

In math classrooms, the best way to get students learning is to get them talking to each other about math. At our High School, we do this using the Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) model. Instead of having students sit at their seats copying down notes and repeating steps, we have our students on their feet, working in groups, and challenging themselves to think about math in new ways.

The research behind BTC tells us that the best way to get students thinking and working together is to have them work on whiteboards so that they can think collaboratively and easily change their answers whenever they have new ideas.

My classroom has 7 different whiteboards that students can write on.

Unfortunately, our district has faced a massive budget shortfall this year which has resulted in major cuts to staff and an increase of class size. Now that I have 26-28 students in each class, 7 whiteboards is not enough for all of my students to have the chance to participate. Since I have no more wall space to hang additional whiteboards, rolling whiteboards will help me make better use of my room so I can get all of my students engaged!
