This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Put a dry erase marker in the hands of a six-year-old, and enthusiasm for math, writing, and other subjects skyrockets. My students love using whiteboards and dry erase markers, but we lack the necessary materials.
I teach first grade in an impoverished urban area.
All of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and nearly half are English Language Learners. Despite some of the challenges my students face at home and in their neighborhood, my students love to come to school and are very eager to learn.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of whiteboards, dry erase markers, and erasers. Individual whiteboards allow students to practice skills such as adding and subtracting in an earth-friendly matter, rather than going through reams of paper. These whiteboards are ideal for center work, and they also allow me to quickly assess student understanding in math and other subjects as students jot down their answers to problems and show them to me using their boards. Dry erase markers are costly for my students, whose families can often only afford the basics. I've requested enough markers to last my class the entire school year, ensuring students have the necessary supplies to use the whiteboards effectively. Further, the erasers I've requested will help save paper towels or tissues, commonly used materials for erasing whiteboards that are costly and not environmentally friendly.
With this donation, a class of first graders will have the necessary tools to practice important skills and demonstrate their learning, all while saving the environment.
