My Students
Aloha! Allow me to introduce you to 16 of my energetic, funny, curious, and courteous fourth graders. I teach at a Title 1 school located in the heart of a diverse community in the Honolulu district on the Island of Oahu. The majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch (77.4%), of immigrant backgrounds where English is a second language, and/or from disadvantaged families.
My students arrive bright and early every day, excited to learn and discover something new about the world around them.
As students part of an inclusion classroom, they vary in learning levels, styles and speed. Despite their differences, my students have a deep respect for one another, and have created an almost family-like bond with a common goal to learn.
My Project
As a first-year teacher taking over a classroom mid-year, I moved into a classroom that didn't have many teaching/student supplies. Much of my own money goes into buying supplies for my students and/or supplies I need to effectively teach them. My classroom is an inclusion classroom and the students vary significantly in learning levels. I rely heavily on ability grouping within my classroom to differentiate instruction and to reach and teach all my students.
Using dry erase whiteboards (markers and erasers) with my students allows me to quickly assess them as I teach, and an easel whiteboard would allow me to better teach my students in a small group setting.
For students, dry erase whiteboards (markers and pens) can serve as a quick way to practice math, respond to questions, and create art. For teachers, dry erase whiteboards can serve as vital tool to quickly check for student understanding and determining the pace of a lesson.
An easel whiteboard would serve as an effective tool in my classroom to be used by both the students and myself. Having a mobile whiteboard would allow me to better move my teaching around the room and give my students more opportunity to work in small group settings.
Having these materials would greatly benefit instruction and learning in my classroom!
