Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple of miles away from USC (Go Trojans!) We are Title I school. Our students receive free meals and almost all of our students are students of color and English Learners.
We are a Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd-grade classroom (yes, you read right.
there are 4 different grade levels.. in one classroom!) My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects learning, communication, and behavior. Students with autism also face challenges with social skills. Some students have very limited language and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.
My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and nonacademic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence at an early age.
My Project
Distance learning is here and we are ready to face all of the challenges, ups, and downs that this new learning environment brings us. My students with special needs benefit from hands-on learning so they need the proper materials for our lessons during distance learning. I have noticed that the majority of my students do not have the materials needed to be fully engaged in our lessons.
Whiteboards, whiteboard markers, journals, and other school supplies will help my students fully engage in our synchronous and asynchronous lessons.
While we are on our Zoom, I ask my students to also show their thinking by writing their ideas down. Not all students are able to orally share their thoughts, so they need another outlet to express their thinking. Having materials such as a whiteboard and journal would help my students immensely.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
