Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Chemistry at a large urban high school with students at risk: at risk of joining gangs, risk of being shot, risk of going to prison, risk of having children too young, and mostly risk of not graduating high school and going to college.

But the real risk is not giving them everything they need to be successful, so I am doing everything I can to help them develop the skills they need to graduate high school, go to college, and become productive citizens. By providing them with every opportunity to be successful, my students are the future and the chance their community needs. My students have no skills in graphing, a skill they need to be successful in high school and pass the high school exit exam.

By adding graphing interactive whiteboards and markers to my lessons, students will be able to practice graphing and learn things that will help them with chemistry and their math classes. When we get to our unit on energy, students will graph the heating curve of water and learn the difference between kinetic and potential energy. When we learn about reaction rates, my students will graph as well. My intention is to find graphing opportunities related to each of my units of study so my students have lots of opportunities to practice. My visual and kinesthetic learners will benefit immensely from these materials by being able to draw out the concepts we are learning about. The whiteboards have an added benefit; my students often are nervous when learning about new topics or things they are not good at, like graphing. Often that fear stops them from trying the first time. Having the whiteboards will allow my students to feel comfortable in making mistakes while they are learning how to graph.

Because none of my students' parents have gone to college, and because none of them can help their kids with chemistry (a requirement for graduating high school and being accepted to a 4-year college), your donation will help a group of students who otherwise would have little opportunity to go to college not only get there, but be successful. Thank you for your help!
