Whiteboards for 1st Grade Class Individual Learning

My students need 30 individual whiteboards & dry erase markers to demonstrate their knowledge in writing so that all students can respond to questions.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Neal's classroom raised $363

My Students

My students have a REALLY BIG GOAL of reaching 1.7 years of reading growth this year. In a traditional school, 1 year of growth is expected. It is my job to push my students further because they started at a greater deficit and need to make more than a year of growth in order to catch up.

My school is a charter school that serves a low-income community.

The students who enter my classroom are already behind their more affluent peers in reading. The students and parents are enthusiastic about learning, but do not have the tools (books, writing utensils, etc.) to work on reading and writing outside of school. With a longer school day, longer school year, and strategic planning, my students will make significant gains to leave first grade reading on grade level, so that they have a fair chance at life.

My Project

My students will use the individual whiteboards for multiple activities in the classroom to demonstrate their understanding, allow everyone a chance to respond, and allow me to quickly and effectively correct misunderstandings. Additionally, these boards, which provide lines on one side and free space on the other, will allow students to show their creativity by drawing (many of my first graders are not yet able to write). I have found that whiteboards allow students to take risks with their writing and thinking so that they develop skills they can later put on paper.

By allowing students to demonstrate their understanding in their own way, they will be able to learn through different modes of expression and creativity.

Additionally, whiteboards allow students to work collaboratively with everyone contributing. They have the opportunity to write their answer and then learn from each other in their small group. Whiteboards provide a way to answer that has a low affective level as it is easy to make corrections and promotes a culture of error.
