Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Due to the coronavirus, my students are currently engaged in distance learning. The students engage weekly in Zoom class sessions. It is difficult to check understanding immediately when I cannot see my students’ work as I’m teaching. In class, the students use whiteboards and markers to record their answers then raise their boards so I can immediately check for understanding. Because we’re on Zoom it’s very difficult to see the students answers because they write small on paper and it’s not clear on the screen. The students need their own whiteboard and dry erase markers.
My Project
I work in a low income area with a lot of at-risk students. Many of the students have already had very traumatic experiences in their lives and there are many dangers around them. Additionally, many of the parents work more than one job and it’s not unusual that the kids have to take care of themselves or their siblings. These markers and whiteboards will help the students stay accountable for their work, they’ll get instant teacher feedback, and will help the students grow academically and in confidence. It’ll help ensure they know the material so they do not have to struggle with it at home.
