This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. My students love learning and get excited about learning daily.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

Learning is our focus and finding creative ways to learn mathematics so that every student is reached is a priority. We have began to implement Cognitive Guided Instruction (CGI) for our mathematical practice and it has changed the classroom in a great way.

My Project

I started implementing Cognitive Guided Instruction (CGI) this year for my math instruction and it has completely changed the classroom dynamics when it comes to students learning mathematical concepts. Students tend to either love math, or the complete opposite, and there is rarely an in between. It's difficult and if students don't have a strong foundation in basic number sense and can't communicate their mathematical reasoning, the challenge only widens.

CGI has given all of my students a new found interest in mathematics.

It is still challenging but they are more engaged, talking more about their strategies, are more confident and the best part they are learning from each other. CGI is all about student engagement, students are using manipulatives, drawing their strategies, organizing and communicating their thinking daily.

This eBeam Edge would convert our classic whiteboard into an interactive one and support my students in their journey through CGI. This technology would give students an opportunity to explain and display their thinking using an interactive whiteboard. They could visually explain their many strategies to solving problems, formulating algorithms, and organizing their thoughts. We have to continue evolving with our students and finding news ways to keep them engaged and excited about learning. This would be a great way to do just that!
