This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day these kindergarten students start with eating breakfast in the classroom. We then have our math lesson. How fun is it to explore math through a worksheet? My students need hands on activities to enhance their number sense. We then have center rotation time. Students are divided up into small groups of 6 students. We rotate around different center activities for about an hour. They are always excited for a rotation at the listening center.
This school is a Title I school.
Many students come from disadvantaged homes. The classroom consists of multinational and multilingual students. Many students come from homes without books and have never been read to. They love to sit and listen to stories being read to them.
My Project
These books will be added to a rotation of books that will be listened to at least twice a week during our center rotation time. Students love to listen to me read a story to them. It is impossible for me to be in two places at once. While I am giving direct instruction to a small group of students, another small group will be able to listen to a book on tape. Some books are science based books while others are centered on math.
The more a child is read to, the better reader he or she will be.
This donation will allow my students to have more books read to them. They will also be exposed to more of the English language while listening to these books. Research shows that the larger a students' vocabulary, the better a reader they will become.
The dry erase alphabet writing books will also be added to our reading centers.
The math games will also be added to our math center rotation time that we start with in the morning. My students need hands on, math manipulatives in order to gain an understanding of the value each number has. These games will provide my students an opportunity to count objects and add manipulatives together.
