My students need a fresh way to assist them in becoming better readers, such as using WhisperPhones to hear themselves reading without distracting others.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like having to read in front of your peers? Pretty great if you were a good reader, but pretty scary if you weren't. Using the WhisperPhone will allow them to practice reading privately & hear how they sound. They will feel more confident before reading with the class.
We are a school of about 900.
Our school is mostly comprised of Hispanic children that speak English as their second language. My amazing students are a melting pot of varying intelligences, learning disabilities & ESOL levels. The one thing that unifies them is their acceptance of one another and hunger to learn. They want to understand what they are being taught and master it. They are children from low to medium income families whose parents are involved, but are sometimes limited in what they can do to assist their children because of work or language barriers.
My Project
I am requesting WhisperPhones because the second graders that are coming in the beginning of the year are not arriving phonemically aware. They should be able to sound out letters or blend sounds but they cannot. I feel that using WhisperPhones will allow the students to privately practice reading by hearing how they sound. Listening to how they pronounce words correctly or incorrectly will give them the opportunity to correct themselves. I believe that this will positively impact the learning of my students by giving them the privacy to make mistakes, as well as, provide them with the opportunity to be responsible for their learning. I am hoping that you can help me in giving my wonderful students a different and exciting way to practice their reading and become phonemically aware.
My favorite book is "Thank You, Mr. Falker" by Patricia Polacco.
The book tells the story of a young girl who could not learn to read like everyone else. It took one very caring teacher & a different way of teaching, but Mr. Falker got that little girl to read. That very little girl grew up to be an author... the very author that wrote that book. I want to enable my students to feel confident about their reading. I want them to embrace reading not fear it. Please help me in achieving this goal.
