Whimsical Oaxacan Clay Animal Sculptures!

My students need 250 lbs. of Self Hardening Clay in order for the to sculpt their own whimsical animals inspired by the traditional Oaxacan Animal Sculptures.

My Students

Our students have never experienced working in clay! Do you remember creating art projects in middle school and proudly carrying them home to share with family and friends? My middle school students are hungry to learn, create and thriving in the arts but our resources are very limited!

Students attend a high performing, tuition-free, public charter middle school serving more than 200 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in Massachusetts.

Roughly 72% of students are Latino and low-income, 55% speak a language other than English in the home, and all are admitted via a lottery. This schools highly rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum supported by a structured school culture is the key to the school's success. Our school promotes academic mastery, character development and individual exploration through Our school promotes academic mastery, character development and individual rigorous core academics as well as self reflection, interdisciplinary learning and student empowerment through the visual arts!

My Project

This project will allow students to finally experience the wonderful medium of clay! For generations the Zapotec Indians of the Oaxacan Valley of Southern Mexico have created amazing folk art. The artisans of Oaxaca are famous for producing hand carved whimsical animal figurines meticulously painted in brilliant colors and detailed designs. These animal figurines are believed to bring good luck and are placed throughout the home. This will allow my students to explore a three dimensional, sculptural material and create a project inspired by the Oaxacan traditional art form. Each student will have the opportunity to create an animal out of the terra-cotta clay that is donated.

This project will be incredibly meaningful and special to my 5th and 6th grade students who are eager to experience working in clay!

They will be thrilled to have the opportunity to complete a project inspired by the traditional Oaxacan folk art!
