Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach chemistry to a diverse group of artistic students at a Title I visual and performing arts school in downtown Los Angeles. Students come to our school from all over the city to our public high school to receive a top notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater) and go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country. When my students start reading about all of the chemicals they come into contact with every day, they are surprised, curious, and eager to learn more!
I am always looking for ways to motivate my students in my classroom with innovative and exciting learning opportunities.
My Project
In my Chemistry laboratory, my students often don't have access to the same types of equipment as in other schools. With Next Generation Science Standards, my curriculum has changed to incorporate more student generated laboratory investigations that require new and more advanced equipment, but the school's budget cannot always provide that equipment for us.
With the 8 requested Vernier Temperature Probes and holders, my students will be able to design an experiment to monitor the temperature changes in the chemical reactions between various salts and water as they explore the best combination to create the most efficient cold pack for our school's first aid.
Students will use the probes to measure and graph the various temperatures in their designed experiments and compare their findings. This piece of laboratory technology is an essential part of our ability to investigate this topic in our unit on energy. Thank you for supporting my students' scientific growth and possibly inspiring a future scientist or engineer!
