Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classes study English language arts in a multimedia academy within a public high school. Thanks to past donors and grants, our students are able to work in a media-rich environment with visuals, demonstrations, and presentations.
Our school is located in an urban area and serves nearly 3,000 students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.
Being in a 3-year multimedia academy during their last years of high school, students in my class like to be creative, artistic and innovative using traditional and digital media. Some have had a life of academic successes and are looking to feed their creative passions and enrich their experiences and skill sets. Others find that the academy is a place that helps them to find a reason to come to school--a space where they can express themselves and feel like they belong. Regardless of why students are there, they all share a common interest and grow nearly as close as a family by the time they graduate from high school.
My Project
I have have the technology, but forgot the furniture! With this media cart, students will actually be able to see anyone presenting or demonstrating on the computer or document camera. Right now, that person pops up from the corner of the room like a meerkat. Whether it is me, a student, or another presenter before the class, the level of interaction is diminished and the presenter is unable to observe the audience. For me, that means that I am unable to see who is following or understanding and who is not. Since today's successful classrooms utilize media much more than years past, tools for presenting are crucial. Thus, spaces for students to demonstrate their own ideas and teach their peers are critical given the creativity and collaboration skills required for this century. In an English class, presentation tools are also extremely helpful for teaching writing as it allows teachers and students to share examples and model revision.
While a media cart will allow me, the teacher, to better teach directly, it will also better support a more student-centered classroom where ideas and work are shared among students.
The classroom of today freely and easily provides students with high-tech tools and spaces for activities that build public speaking, presenting, and collaborating skills. These are the skills that they will take with them into any walk of life.
