Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading and speaking Math? I teach third grade in a a dual language school which means students are learning in both English and Spanish. About 70% of the students in my school come from families in need. Our population includes children from a variety of cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.

Although our students are learning two languages, let's not forget that mathematics is a language, too. To be a good math reader, you have to read from right to left, left to right (i.e. on a number line), and from top to bottom or bottom to top (i.e.. on charts or graphs). To read mathematics, children must not only decode the words, but numeric and nonnumeric symbols. Math also has a dense vocabulary. Most students don't come to school with a vocabulary that includes words like equation, mode or midpoint. One way to address this is to provide children with as many opportunities to read as possible! And when what they read introduces them to mathematical concepts in real world situations, it's like getting a two for one deal!

I would like to create a mathematics library. These books would be set apart from the regular classroom library but would be available for students to check out for classroom use or to take home. Each time a student checks out a book to take home, they will be asked to read the book and explain the mathematical concepts. "Where's the Math?" The books would also be available for the third graders to read with their kindergarten Reading buddies.

Have you ever seen the person in the express lane with 14 items instead of 10? Do you wonder if they can't read? Or do you wonder if they can't count? Are you worried it might be both? Students need to learn how to "read mathematics" no matter where they find it. It is all about making sense of what they see on a page. We want students who can work through problems, communicate and organize their ideas, apply problem solving skills to a variety of situations and develop flexibility in representing ideas. In doing so, students start to see math as a part of life, not just a school subject. A great place to get started learning how to read mathematically, is by reading books in which characters confront mathematical situations in their worlds and solve them and make sense of them. Here is an opportunity for children see where the math is!
