The Soviet Union dissolved into 15 new countries in 1991, but the library's only globe is labeled "U.S.S.R." The library is long overdue for a new one!
Our 430 students represent a cross-section of this diverse city.
Many of our families are first and second generation Americans who have rich cultural histories rooted in countries around the globe. The library serves 100% of these students every week. Students, in kindergarten through fifth grade, visit the library weekly with their class for a literacy lesson and to check out books. In addition, second through fifth grade students enjoy the library during lunch recess. After school, the library is utilized by the after-school program. Our library is a vibrant learning center, and our students are deserving of relevant and current resources.
My Project
In bringing literature to life, the globe is often used as a teaching tool. For example, teaching trickster tales as a genre, with Anansi tales from Ghana, it is meaningful to show the students where Ghana is located. In reading The Memory Coat, the story of two Russian cousins who came to America through Ellis Island, it is helpful to use a globe to trace their route across the ocean.
Internet maps and GPS systems have revolutionized the way we find locations, but they cannot replace the skill of reading and examining maps and globes.
With a new globe, our students will have a new perspective on what it means to "think globally," and the library will have a teaching tool it will no longer need to be ashamed of.
