Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a special education teacher who teaches in a public elementary school in a socioeconomically disadvantaged large urban area. I teach a 4th and 5th grade class for students with mild to moderate disabilities. All of my students are working on the general education curriculum but receive classroom accommodations to make the material more accessible.
Though my students struggle in various academic and social areas, they find constant joy in each new experience, and their faces beam with excitement from even the smallest successes.
They find true joy and excitement in learning. These children are a true joy to work with every day.
My students have many challenges in life. Many are coming from families living below the poverty line. All of them have some form of disability which qualifies them for my classroom, including autism, audio or visual processing deficits, and severe reading disabilities. In spite of these challenges, my students are some of the most wonderful, amazingly positive and inquisitive kids I have ever met.
My Project
My students will have the chance to soar and explore the world around them through these amazingly fun and colorful workbooks. My students have special needs, and many of them have never even travelled outside of the city we live in. Some have difficulty even naming the state we live in. In order to expose them to the world around them and sharpen their geography skills, I have designed a thematic unit on maps. I chose these workbooks because they have colorful and engaging activities that are sure get them excited about geography and teach them important map skills.
We will use these two books over the course of the school year to teach concepts such as latitude and longitude, map legends and scales, the geography of different areas, and their location in relationship to other areas in our country and the world.
We will also use the concepts in these books as stepping off points for writing assignments. For example, after reading about two different places, I will have them use the information to write a compare and contrast essay.
I want my students to get exposure to the world outside of our city. I want them to have greater experiential learning. I don't want their disabilities to ever hold them back in life. I wish I could take them all on a train trip across America so that they could see all the beauty and wonder that exist in our country and experience it for themselves. Perhaps one day they will see it for themselves. Maybe what I teach them today will spark an interest and they will travel to exotic lands. Today though, I cannot provide that experience for them. I can only give them these workbooks which I hope will plant the seeds of knowledge.
