Our students are a part of a Pre-K Center in District 24 in Queens New York. Our student body reflects the definition of a mosaic. We are a beautiful picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass. However, instead of small hard pieces of glass, we are small independent little people, who together form a close knit group of enthusiastic and excited learners. Our community is diverse. Our school has a student body that reflects the ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and religious diversity of the neighborhood it calls home.
What makes our students special is the fact that they are so open to learning about different cultures and their ability to see what makes us different is a strength and not a weakness.
They love to learn new words in each other's language and love to share stories about their families cultures and traditions.
My Project
Students are working on a multi- cultural art study and our artist is Diego Rivera. We are learning about his life and his artwork and what inspired him. Teaching children to recognize the choices an artist or designer makes in portraying a subject helps kids understand the concept that what they see may be someone’s interpretation of reality.
When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives.
“Art is a way to encourage the process and the experience of thinking and making things better!” Your generous donation will allow students to create a class mural that reflects the diversity of our class, their own family and their neighborhood experiences. Children can learn to appreciate cultural diversity in styles of art and we are hoping that this project will boost their self esteem as they are recognized and accepted for their individuality. In turn, they feel good about themselves as other children recognize the worth of their traditions and customs.
