Fourth grade is the first year in our school where students really focus on world geography and need to apply the concepts they learn to other lessons. Students come to me not knowing how many continents there are, which one we live in, and where Europe is. They need to know these basic facts in order to further their knowledge about the first explorers, the development of our country, and the revolutionary war.
Many of our classroom lessons take place on the floor. No one wants to sit on our old, grimy, stained carpet anymore. Our classroom is equipped with a map of New York and a map of North America but we do not have a map of the world.
What better way to introduce world geography than with a big, eye-catching carpet! This rugged carpet features an accurate world map, with simple outlines, clearly defined continents and easy-to-read text. The world’s seven continents and four oceans are represented and there is even a compass rose to help students begin to explore the concept of direction.
