This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year is our second as an elementary school and the culture of finding a way or making one is stronger. Our school is growing and my returning students have been with us when we barely had enough books to call it a library.
My students come from many different backgrounds and are mostly African American and Latino students, they know what it's like to not have much at school if we are talking materials but what they continue to have is GRIT.
I could call off the statistics stacked against them but that is not their reality. My students work the hardest they can to learn and show it through their constant push to be better than the day before.
As their teacher, I simply want to give them every opportunity to grow and break barriers that shouldn't exist in society, let alone in their school, in their community, and in their homes. Yes, every child will learn no matter the circumstance, but if we can find a way to give them something that can make their learning that much easier, accessible, tangible, just imagine how much more they will learn.
My Project
As the end of the year comes closer our community supplies have started to dwindle down. Erasers are gone, markers are dried out, and the pencils are completely missing.
My students need to make it to the end of the year with the basic necessities of school supplies.
We use pencils to fill out exit tickets, practice handwriting, and draft papers. Our classroom runs on dry erase markers, they use them on the whiteboards to stay engaged in math and phonics lessons as they solve a problem or spell a word. We need colored pencils and markers to make our illustrations come to life. Please bring back the pencils.
