Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I teach Kindergarten at an urban public school in Illinois. We have 34 Kindergarteners in our classroom. Almost all of my students speak English as their second language and most are bilingual in English and Spanish. All of my students receive a free breakfast, that we eat in the classroom each morning, and most students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
We don't have enough maps in our classroom! My Kindergarteners are often confused about what city, state and country they are from and where they live. My Kindergarteners, while most speak Spanish as their native language, are from Spanish speaking countries around the world. We need maps and geography materials in our classroom that will help my Kindergartens understand both where they live and where they are from.
I have asked for large US and World maps and small matching ones for my Kindergarteners to share. These maps can all be written on with dry erase markers! As I am drawing and demonstrating on the large maps the students can also be drawing on their small maps!
I have also asked for books about geography and floor puzzles to keep the students interested in geography and maps during independent reading and center time.
Finally, I have asked for color and black and white printer ink so that I can scan and print map projects and activities that the students create!
You can help my Kindergarteners become aware of the city, state and country they live in now and the countries that their families are from! The maps, books, puzzle and ink I have asked for will keep my students engaged in and excited about US and World geography. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my proposal.
