Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of an urban 9-12 secondary school in California. One of my main literary missions is to transform my students into lifelong recreational readers and to bolster their academic reading skills. Unfortunately, not enough of our students read for pleasure on a consistent basis. Moreover, because they don't read often enough, too many students score abysmally low on state literacy tests and struggle with basic reading tasks. Therefore, it is my fervent goal to encourage all students to find the magic and meaning in books.

My Project

Knowing HOW to read is only half the battle. Getting kids TO READ is the other half. It doesn't matter if young people have a keen mastery of reading mechanics if they never choose to pick up a book and read it. Fortunately, graphic novels have been invented and I am slowly building my collection of them in the school library. These books appeal to students who are otherwise resistant to reading. The pictures provide context clues for students whose reading skills are limited and aesthetic interest for those who have short attention spans and are intimidated by too much text.

Therefore, I have discovered that if I keep feeding my reluctant readers graphic novels, I can inspire some to start the reading habit and others to continue reading.
