My Students
If you were to walk into my second grade classroom, you would find desks, chairs, posters, textbooks, and most likely some school supplies out of place here and there - someone dropped a pencil on the ground again or left crayons on a table - all things that are found in a typical, elementary classroom. As you look past the things, you would see 19 individual and unique faces around the room as well. The items you saw around the room might give hints of the content being taught or the projects being constructed, but they won't give you any insight on the capabilities and struggles of those precious students I have been entrusted to teach.
My class is made up of 19 uniquely, talented students, each of whom is gifted in various ways!
I love seeing the comradery and friendships that develop throughout the year, as well as seeing my students use their strengths to encourage and help classmates who may have a weakness in the area of their strength. By working together, we can make each other more successful!
My Project
The past couple years teachers, including myself, have noticed that students are missing important skills, and have increased weaknesses; especially in the areas of reading and math. In order to overcome these deficiencies and encourage student growth, I have been conducting small groups that intentionally focus on the skill areas that need improvement.
Having fun, hands-on activities, interactive center games, and leveled book study groups will keep students engaged while getting practice in these needed areas!
My students love hands-on activities and I know that these math and phonics games will be great reinforcement for those who need it. We are fortunate to have one-to-one student Chromebooks in our classroom, but would love the addition of individual headphones that can be used for listening centers while I am working with other small groups. I have a teacher iPad that is used to keep track of student data and progress, as well as for learning activities with student groups. Having an iPad pencil would make some of these activities easier to accomplish.
While we have been overly focused on the students who need extra support and instruction, I have recognized the need to encourage and challenge the students in my room who already have these skills mastered. By creating book studies over chapter books, I can offer enrichment activities for my students who need a challenge. I can't wait to see the excitement and anticipation they have as they reach the end of a chapter and start predicting what could happen next!
