When Life Gives You Lemons, Run and Operate a Class Business
My students need materials to learn financial literacy. They will use a laminator, sheets and paper to make flyers, track sales, and charts, and a cashbox to hold money.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Welcome to 5th grade in a low income area where the common core demands not only tax our brains but our budget! Our class has yet to learn the value of a dollar. It is important for our students to learn how to work hard, the importance of saving/ spending wisely, and have real world experiences.
My NYC public school students live in a neighborhood which contains one of NYC's largest low income housing communities.
In their day-to-day lives, some can see a lot of ugliness, and the majority of them find school a safe way to escape that. As their teacher, I recognize my students as smart, creative individuals who have the potential to shatter the "kid from the projects" stereotype and to move on and develop into well-educated productive members of society.
My Project
This year the fifth grade has decided to go to Washington D.C. This trip is a big expense to parents given our area. In order to offset the price of the trip students will learn and utilize financial literacy topics such as risk management, saving, spending, and investing. The students are already so excited about this real world learning that they have even created the company, "When Life Gives You Lemons Drink Company." This company will use the skills learned in the classroom along with the resources provided by donorschoose.org to create a lemonade stand.
Students will use laminator sheets to laminate menus, progress charts, and nutritional facts for the "consumers." The students will also utilize the other materials such as the paper and cashbox to explore and experience various careers such as advertising/ marketing, and retail operations/ management. The proceeds from our Lemonade sale will go to pay the balance of our senior trip to Washington D.C.
Donations will help my students in many ways.
It will allow them to experience various types of careers, and learn important financial literacy skills which will help them for the rest of their lives. But most importantly, by utilizing these materials my students will be able to learn that when life gives you lemons... sell some lemonade because anything worth having is worth working hard for!
